Hotspot User Traffic with Support for IPSec Encryption
Perfigo Simplifies Locating Hotspots and Secures Hotspot User Traffic with Support for IPSec Encryption
Perfigo, Inc. today announced the formation of a strategic partnership with Lycos Europe with the goal of offering end users secure and seamless access from any hotspot location. The vision of the joint Perfigo and Lycos solution is to provide hotspot users the ability to authenticate, connect over a secure pipe, and protect against worms and viruses. The first phase of this service, available in Germany at the end of January, will support locating and securing hotpot usage. The agreement allows Lycos Europe to generate revenue from the popular hotspot market, which is key for mobile professionals, and allow them to roam onto and utilize any available hotspot, regardless of which provider owns it.
Solid Security for Hotspot Users
A major obstacle for mobile users on the road is securing communications through hotspots. The Lycos Europe/Perfigo solution aids in ensuring data privacy and integrity for mobile professionals, allowing them to meet the strict security requirements established by their employers. Without such a secure solution, most professionals must forgo using hotspots and wait to get to their own corporate offices, which largely eliminates the convenience of wireless. Secondarily, the solution introduced by Lycos Europe and Perfigo simplifies the task of choosing from a wide array of hotspots. As a leading European Internet destination operating a pan-European network of web sites in eight languages, Lycos Europe, with the help of Perfigo, is in an ideal position to help mobile users easily overcome all of these challenges.
Perfigo Solution For the first phase of the launch in January, the Perfigo technology provides subscribers a simple interface to help them easily locate the nearest hotspot, indicates IPSec connectivity, and provides a visual map of hotspot locations through integration with third party mapping software. "Corporations typically do not approve of hotspots use by their mobile professionals because of the security risk involved," said Jurgen Galler, Vice President Mobile Business Development for Lycos Europe. "The Lycos Europe/Perfigo offering supports IPSec encryption for our subscribers, which means mobile professionals can use the service without risk of compromising data integrity or privacy when connected via IPSec. It also eliminates the hassle of users having to find the nearest hotspot." "In general, hotspots are insecure and most people cannot or will not utilize them for corporate use," said Arvin Babu, Perfigo's CEO. "Traffic is difficult, if not impossible, to encrypt through hotspots, and worms and viruses pose a constant threat to hotspot use because of its insecure nature. Perfigo is committed to securing corporate networks, and securing mobile professionals who use hotspots to gain access to corporate resources is further proof of that commitment."
Future Offerings
The two companies will continue working closely to continually improve wireless access for Lycos Europe subscribers. Later in the year, Lycos Europe subscribers who use hotspots will be protected against worms and viruses with Perfigo's CleanMachines solution. CleanMachines prevents the spread of viruses by scanning devices and intelligently blocking vulnerable machines from accessing a network (in this case, through a hotspot) until they are verified as virus-free.
